Can Polycystic Kidney Disease Patients Drink Alcohol


Moderation of drinking alcohol may be okay for PKD patients who are not in severe condition, at least not on dialysis. As individual differences exist among different patients, talking with your doctor will help you find whether alcohol can be a choice. If the answer is yes, please make a detailed inquiry about allowable amounts and brands.

Once you start dialysis, alcohol is often managed out of diet plan for it has a great chance to cause rapid damages to poor kidneys, such as sharp increase in blood pressure.

Those PKD patients who suffer from high blood pressure are suggest not to drink for alcohol can cause blood pressure levels to elevate in those with hypertension.

If the PKD patients are with controlled blood sugar level, you may drink a moderate alcohol after checking with your doctor. Remember to take some food when you drink, for an empty stomach can drop blood sugar levels in those with diabetes.

Drinking moderate alcohol is allowable in some specific condition of PKD, even so, we still suggest patients with PKD quit drinking at best, because the moderate amount is hard for individual to control.
